The cloud has proven to be an extremely useful tool for the modern business. Not only does it provide anywhere-anytime access to applications, processing, storage, et al; it also delivers those products as a service, allowing you to budget for recurring costs rather than major upfront ones. This provides your organization with functional, supported, and secure computing environments that eliminate a lot of the support costs that traditional computing environments require. It sounds like a perfect scenario for small and large businesses alike, but things aren’t always what they seem, as a lot of cloud users have found that they have incurred several hidden costs by using cloud platforms. Today, we take a look at these hidden costs.

A study from Research In Action polled 468 CIOs about their cloud usage and the costs associated with them. Many admitted that cloud investment was one of the largest expenses their organization would have from a technology point of view. The study went on to find that while a majority of CIOs considered the “hidden” costs of this technology, much of the concern is alleviated by the reputation of their vendors. Some of the potential problems they considered include:

  • Having to put forth more effort to properly manage vendors, and their corresponding Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Bottlenecking and the impact poor cloud performance could have on brand perception, productivity, and customer support.
  • The increased cost of solving complex problems inside cloud environments.

Are these concerns justified? Sure, but they are hard to measure. Many businesses just haven’t developed a system to properly quantify the perceived loss in revenue tied to cloud inefficiency. In fact, most companies don’t have updated, automated methods in use to track and manage their cloud performance.

Costs of Scalability
Many organizations also run into cloud cost overruns when dealing with the scale of their cloud platforms. Costs associated with over-provisioning (buying too much), under-provisioning (buying too little), management, and administration of cloud hosted environments present costs that may not look significant up front, but over time can have negative effects on the overall profitability of a business. Understanding the amount of space/processing you’ll need to meet your organization's needs is almost always going to be a fluid situation, but understanding how they affect your business’ bottom line is crucial to mitigate unwanted monetary responsibilities or cost overruns associated with the cloud platforms you utilize.

Going Too Far
Cloud platforms are nice, but you don’t have to look much further than your personal situation to see how the ease of use these platforms provide can get expensive pretty quick. For the individual, costs add up quick thanks to cloud-based streaming media and other platforms that come in a subscription model. You’ve got Netflix, Spotify, Hulu, and many, many more that are relatively cheap. Microsoft Office 365 is exceptionally useful and affordable, providing unparalleled value for about any computer user. The more you subscribe to, the more costs add up, which is why you’ll want to design, and stick to a dedicated plan to avoid overextending yourself, or your organization.

Utility computing in the cloud, whether it be applications, storage, processing, or some other form, is extraordinarily valuable, but only if you understand how to avoid paying more than you should for your cloud assets. The knowledgeable technicians at Infradapt can help you come up with cloud deployment strategy, while also helping you avoid cost overruns typically associated with these assets. Is Cloud Waste Eating Away at Your Company’s Bottom Line? http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/newsletter-content/entry/is-cloud-waste-eating-away-at-your-company-s-bottom-line http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/newsletter-content/entry/is-cloud-waste-eating-away-at-your-company-s-bottom-line

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Too much of a good thing becomes a bad thing?” Well, there’s a hint of truth to this, especially in the business world. Just because your cloud solution allows your business to store a huge amount of data in the cloud, doesn’t mean that you are getting the best return-on-investment. In fact, you might just be unknowingly wasting resources that would be better used elsewhere.

4 Reasons Why The Cloud is a Smart Business Decision http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/blog/entry/4-reasons-why-the-cloud-is-a-smart-business-decision http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/blog/entry/4-reasons-why-the-cloud-is-a-smart-business-decision

The cloud is a great way to make services and solutions available to your employees anytime, anywhere. There are now plenty of ways to leverage out the cloud for the benefit of your business. Here are four such ways:

The Cloud Offers Enhanced Security
All businesses need to consider security a priority, and the cloud can offer an improved stance on data security. One of the primary values offered by cloud providers is their security. You can trust that your investment in the cloud, will keep your data protected.

Plus, if you want to keep the risk factor to a minimum, you can allow for the remote wiping of devices via your cloud solution. This lets you eliminate sensitive data that might be compromised should a device be lost or stolen. You might be surprised by how often this happens, especially during business trips.

Improved Data Access
One of the best ways to use cloud solutions is on the go, be it from a coffee shop or a convenient park bench. If something were to happen that renders the employee unable to make it to the office that day, they can maintain their output without falling behind.

Emphasis on Reliability
Your business needs reliable access to data, and the mark of any good cloud provider is how reliable they are. When you’re looking for a cloud solution, be sure to scour through the contract to find how much uptime is guaranteed. While 100% uptime is impossible, a good cloud provider will do their best to make their uptime rates as high as possible, and provide the support to make sure that any problems are resolved as soon as possible.

When you use services hosted in the cloud, you can access resources without worrying about managing the hardware that they’re located on, or the software being deployed. You can stay productive without halting operations to maintain your infrastructure.

Cloud Services Save You Money
The cloud provides an opportunity to cut out unnecessary expenses. This is primarily due to the fact that you no longer have to manage the servers that your data is hosted on, or purchase additional software licenses. This means that you also don’t have to procure this equipment. Instead, all you have to do is pay your cloud provider a monthly fee, just like you would for any other service.

Infradapt wants to help your business benefit from quality cloud solutions. To learn more about our services, reach out to us at 800.394.2301.

Outsourced IT is Specially Designed for Businesses that are Stretched Too Thin http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/newsletter-content/entry/outsourced-it-is-specially-designed-for-businesses-that-are-stretched-too-thin http://jc.infradapt.com/index.php/newsletter-content/entry/outsourced-it-is-specially-designed-for-businesses-that-are-stretched-too-thin

Running a business is challenging, especially when it comes to juggling your assets and your IT budget. That’s not even mentioning managing your workforce, or delegating tasks out to those who are qualified to perform them. While you’re busy with all of these responsibilities, chances are that there will always be one task within your organization that’s better handled by a professional: your IT management.

Some businesses have a hard time admitting that they don’t have someone skilled enough to perform certain tasks. Plus, IT management and maintenance isn’t something that you want an inexperienced worker handling. The truth about situations like this is that outsourcing is, in fact, a valid option, and one that shouldn’t be dismissed - especially for small businesses. Sometimes small organizations don’t have the time to deal with routine maintenance, while others have trouble attracting top talent. Both scenarios inevitably lead to technology that isn’t cared for properly, and will eventually break down.

For this specific reason, outsourcing IT management and maintenance is one of the most valuable outsourced services that your business can implement. After all, you started your business for the purpose of providing a service you love, not to manage your technology solutions. If you want to focus on maximizing the quality of your services, you need someone watching your technology that can keep an eye on it 24/7. You just might find that your goals are all within arm’s reach at long lost.

One of the major benefits of managed IT services is the fact that your technology will be handled by a professional technician, rather than untrained employees. You don’t want just anyone performing maintenance on your business’s IT solutions. Imagine what would happen if the person in charge of your IT were to mishandle or mismanage your technology - expensive downtime could ensue, and your budget could be burdened with frustrating repair costs and replacement fees. Of course, one of the most crippling parts of a hardware failure or downtime event is the data that’s lost when a server goes down. Unless you have support ready and on-hand to help you get through the incident as quickly as possible, an unexpected data loss incident could break your business badly enough that it can’t recover.

When you outsource your IT to Infradapt, you can eliminate this uncertainty and ensure maximum uptime. Infradapt is ready to assist you with your technology at any time, and we make it our goal to minimize downtime and prevent technology difficulties altogether. Our managed IT services can be helpful even if you have an in-house IT department. Chances are that they’re bogged down with IT work, be it upgrading to better technology or applying routine maintenance. Our technicians can assist them and provide a second opinion when it’s needed, as well as free up time by eliminating issues altogether.

Our technicians want to see you make the most of your business, and we’ll use our expertise to limit the IT roadblocks you encounter so that you can focus on your goals. To learn more, give us a call at 800.394.2301.
